Classroom Examples of Robustness Problems in Geometric Computations ? ( Extended Abstract )
نویسندگان
چکیده
The algorithms of computational geometry are designed for a machine model with exact real arithmetic. Substituting floating point arithmetic for the assumed real arithmetic may cause implementations to fail. Although this is well known, there is no comprehensive documentation of what can go wrong and why. In this extended abstract, we study a simple incremental algorithm for planar convex hulls and give examples which make the algorithm fail in all possible ways. We also show how to construct failure-examples semi-systematically and discuss the geometry of the floating point implementation of the orientation predicate. We hope that our work will be useful for teaching computational geometry. The full paper is available at www.mpi-sb.mpg.de/ ̃mehlhorn/ ftp/ClassRoomExamples.ps. It contains further examples, more theory, and color pictures. We strongly recommend to read the full paper instead of this extended abstract.

متن کاملA Robust Desirability-based Approach to Optimizing Multiple Correlated Responses
There are many real problems in which multiple responses should be optimized simultaneously by setting of process variables. One of the common approaches for optimization of multi-response problems is desirability function. In most real cases, there is a correlation structure between responses so ignoring the correlation may lead to mistake results. Hence, in this paper a robust approach based ...
متن کاملTHE EFFECTS OF INITIAL SAMPLING AND PENALTY FUNCTIONS IN OPTIMAL DESIGN OF TRUSSES USING METAHEURISTIC ALGORITHMS
Although Genetic algorithm (GA), Ant colony (AC) and Particle swarm optimization algorithm (PSO) have already been extended to various types of engineering problems, the effects of initial sampling beside constraints in the efficiency of algorithms, is still an interesting field. In this paper we show that, initial sampling with a special series of constraints play an important role in the conv...
متن کاملSolving Systems of Polynomial
Current geometric and solid modeling systems use semi-algebraic sets for deening the boundaries of solid objects, curves and surfaces, geometric constraints with mating relationship in a mechanical assembly, physical contacts between objects, collision detection. It turns out that performing many of the geometric operations on the solid boundaries or interacting with geometric constraints is re...
متن کاملGlobal optimization of fractional posynomial geometric programming problems under fuzziness
In this paper we consider a global optimization approach for solving fuzzy fractional posynomial geometric programming problems. The problem of concern involves positive trapezoidal fuzzy numbers in the objective function. For obtaining an optimal solution, Dinkelbach’s algorithm which achieves the optimal solution of the optimization problem by means of solving a sequence of subproblems ...
